Permits show Grocery Outlet to open in Belfair

Grocery Outlet will open a Belfair location in the former Rite Aid, 23960 NE state Route 3, according to permits filed with Mason County.

Rite Aid closed in January 2024 and the 17,455-square-foot building has since been vacant.

On Feb. 13, a change in tenant permit was submitted to the county describing the project as "new Grocery Outlet, previously Rite Aid."

This will be the third grocery chain in Belfair, along with Safeway and QFC.

No opening date has been announced.

A demolition permit filed Jan. 6 listed the project description as "demo interior of old Rite Aid for new Grocery Outlet," according to county records.

A technical review is complete for the demolition and a connection needs verification from the county Board of Health or utilities and a final inspection, according to the permit.

The demolition permit expires July 5.

A review is in process for the change in tenant permit and 11 required inspections are needed before the expiration date of Aug. 12.

Grocery Outlet is a national chain of discount supermarkets that have independent operators.

"Since 1973, Grocery Outlet has partnered with retail leaders to operate their expanding locations. Our Independent Operators have considerable local-decision making autonomy over store operations including hiring, merchandising, marketing and more. You hire, train, and lead your team, doing what you do best, and then we share the profits of your retail store according to our commission structure. We each assume different risks, but share the rewards," according to the Grocery Outlet website for prospective operators, http://www.ownagroceryoutlet.com.

"Based in Emeryville, Calif., Grocery Outlet is a high-growth, extreme-value retailer of name-brand consumables and fresh products sold primarily through a network of independently operated stores. The company and its subsidiaries have more than 520 stores in California, Washington, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Idaho, Nevada, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, Georgia, Ohio, Alabama, Delaware, Kentucky and Virginia," according to http://www.chainstoreage.com.
