Betty Jean Mirka

Betty Jean Mirka passed away peacefully at her home on December 8, 2024, surrounded by her family.

The memories of a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend are the treasures that continue to shine brightly for those who were fortunate to know Betty Jean. Her life was a beautiful embodiment of Southern grace, kindness, and an unwavering devotion to family, faith, and community. Her legacy of love, spirituality, and generosity will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Betty was born on November 25, 1933, in Roxana, Alabama, to Tilton and Josie Hatchett. She was raised in nearby Notasulga, Alabama, alongside her brother Frank, and surrounded by an extended family of cousins, friends, and a warm community. Though she lived away from her beloved Alabama for over 70 years, she never lost her unmistakable Southern accent, a reminder of her roots.

At the age of 20, Betty met Michael Mirka, a young soldier stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. They were married and began a life together that spanned more than six decades. After Michael's 11 years in the military, they settled in Shelton, Washington, where Betty lived for the past 60 years.

Betty's deep and abiding faith was a central part of her life. She was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on April 22, 1967, and remained active in her ministry until the end of her life. She was dearly loved by the members of the three local congregations and had a special bond with those at the Kingdom Hall, who affectionately referred to her as "our Betty." Her faith and warmth were a light to those around her.

Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, known for her nurturing spirit and hospitality. She particularly enjoyed preparing large family dinners and spending time with her family and friends. One of her greatest joys in later years was getting the opportunity to babysit her great-grandson, Cody, even giving him piggyback rides at the age of 77. This special bond brought immense happiness to both of them and was a source of lasting memories. Betty also took great pride in her home, especially her beautiful flower gardens, and had a particular love for her vibrant nasturtiums, which she will be remembered for fondly.

A compassionate woman, Betty's reputation in the community was one of kindness, integrity, and faithfulness. She had a sharp mind and a wonderful sense of humor that stayed with her until the very end. Despite her health challenges, Betty always recognized the blessings in her life and continued to encourage and uplift those around her. To know Betty was truly to love her.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Michael, and her brother Frank. She is survived by her five children: Michael (Pam) Hatchett of Tualatin, OR; Gary and Brian (Elaine) of Shelton, WA; David (Sheree) of Wasilla, AK; and her daughter Terri (Stephen) of Olympia, WA; as well as 16 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Pam and the compassionate hospice team, as well as the many friends, neighbors, and fellow congregation members who provided support and love during Betty's final days.

Betty's gentle spirit and unwavering faith will forever be remembered, and she will be missed by all who had the honor of knowing her.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring.
