Salmon Center needs MLK Day volunteers

Community members looking to volunteer on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Jan. 20, can help remove invasive species at the Salmon Center in Belfair.

"By removing invasive species in a crucial wetland area, we hope to bolster the local ecosystem by protecting the native plants that provide food and habitat for various creatures including birds, pollinators, and Pacific salmon," according to the HCSEG news release.

A group of AmeriCorps members will host the volunteers at the center, located at 600 Rossel Road in Belfair, meeting in front of the classroom by the painted salmon statue, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Volunteers can register on the Salmon Center website at http://www.pnwsalmoncenter.org or drop in on the day of the event.

Tools, snacks and refreshments will be provided, according to the center.

Participants should dress warmly and wear boots and rain gear, depending on the weather, the release states.

AmeriCorps is a national service program that provides stipends for volunteers, who typically work full time for one year.

Members lead the annual MLK Day of Service, working with the King Center, thousands of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, schools and businesses nationwide, according to an AmeriCorps news release.

"Observed each year on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and improve their communities," the release states.
