Shelton girls quiet Kingston, improve to 6-1
The Mary M. Knight girls' basketball team improved to 6-2 on the season headed into the holiday break, earning three wins between Dec. 17-20.
On Dec. 17, the Owls faced league opponent Ocosta in Matlock. The Owls jumped out to a 23-2 lead after the first quarter, behind the leadership from last season's 1B Coastal League MVP Cloey Fletcher, who scored 11 points in the first quarter enroute to a 62-37 victory. Fletcher ended the game with 31 points, 11 rebounds and nine steals. Senior Hailey Morris added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior post Maelynn Nygaard added seven points and seven rebounds for the Owls.
On Dec. 18, the Owls faced 1A Tenino in a nonleague game at home. The Owls forged a 20-7 lead going into halftime and held off a Tenino comeback in the fourth quarter to pull out a 43-35 win. Foul trouble plagued the Owls throughout the game. Morris kept hitting big shots to keep her team in front for the win. She finished the night with 20 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to lead the Owls. Fletcher chipped in eight points and Nygaard added seven points and 11 rebounds.
On Dec. 20, the Owls traveled to Lake Quinault for a league game and triumphed in a lopsided 67-4 victory. Ahead 33-4 at the half, MMK held the Lady Elks scoreless in the second half. Fletcher led the way with 21 points, six rebounds and six steals, while Morris added 15 points, 11 rebounds and one block. Sophomore Tylee Bowcutt had her best game of the season with 12 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and five assists.
The Owls return to action Monday hosting Columbia Adventist in Matlock.
Mary M. Knight boys basketball
The MMK boys basketball team remains in search of its first victory of the year after coming up short in three contests between Dec. 17-20.
On Dec. 17, the Owls fell 49-19 to Ocosta in Matlock; on Dec. 18, MMK dropped a 40-15 decision to Tenino in Matlock; and on Dec. 20, MMK lost 39-29 at Lake Quinault.
MMK (0-7) returns to action Monday against Columbia Adventist in Matlock.
North Mason girls basketball
The North Mason High School girls basketball season had its first loss of the year on Saturday, falling 39-38 at Lakes High School in Lakewood.
The Bulldogs (7-1 overall) return to action Tuesday, hosting North Kitsap.
Shelton boys basketball
The Shelton High School boys basketball team fell three times last week to drop to 2-8 overall.
On Dec. 23, Shelton fell to Central Kitsap 48-40 at Terry Gregg Court in Shelton.
On Dec. 27, Shelton dropped a 66-42 decision to Mountain View in Vancouver, and on Dec. 28, the Climbers lost 45-34 to Evergreen (Vancouver) at Mountain View.
Shelton returns to action hosting Capital at Terry Gregg Court on Monday and opens Evergreen Conference play Tuesday at Black Hills.

The Highclimber girls basketball team improved to 6-1 with a 63-53 road win at Kingston on Friday.
