North Mason band plays during Seahawks broadcast

North Mason High School's band performed at Phil Pugh Stadium for the televised Fox Local Halftime Show during the Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals game Nov. 24.

The game was a win for the Seahawks and a win for NMHS Band Director Chris Drewry and student drum majors Athena Bautista and Carl Lewis, who all spoke with "Good Day Seattle" about the experience Nov. 27.

"Today, our students got the chance to pull back the curtain and see the wizards behind a major television station, all while singing the praises of North Mason HS. Drum majors Athena Bautista and Carl Lewis were exposed to something they'll never forget. From being mic'ed up in the green room, seeing the production team at work, to meeting local media celebrities, our kids made North Mason proud," Drewry wrote on the district's website after traveling to the Fox Seattle studio.

"Good Day" host Erin Mayovsky asked Bautista and Lewis if they get nervous performing.

"I have to forget my nerves," Bautista said.

"I'm responsible for kids. Sometimes just performing as a regular person, I'm nervous, but when I'm up there helping the marching band members, it all goes away," she said.

Lewis said he focuses on his task.

"A lot of times when I get on the field, I ignore the crowd. It's just me and I'm looking at Athena to keep time," he said.

He notices the crowd at the very end when he takes a bow, he said.

Bautista and Lewis talked about their first instruments.

For Bautista, it was the piano. She said there were no extracurricular activities that featured the piano, so her friend told her to try marching band.

She started playing percussion, she said.

Lewis also moved to a different instrument.

"When I was in fourth grade, I decided to play trumpet," he said.

He changed his mind in middle school and switched to trombone because his older brother played. He's been playing ever since, he said.

"It's a lot of practice. The slide is a lot of memorizing where my arm goes at certain times and just how far I'm reaching. It's gotten easier over time," he said.

Drewry said NMHS has a "very strong" band program with 65 students in the marching band this past year.

The school has two concert bands, a percussion ensemble, a choir and musical theater, he said.

NMHS band will perform Saturday at Shelton's Holiday Magic Christmas Parade.

Drewry encouraged students to try band.

"Our group really is a family," he said.

He said that the band performed in Belfair on Sunday and will perform in Shelton for the tree lighting parade.
