Dedicated to the citizens of Mason County, Washington since 1886
Carol Jo Lomas, lovingly known as "Coco," passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024, at the age of 91. Born Carol Lovell on April 19, 1933, in South Bend, Washington, she was the cherished daughter of Dr. Edwin and Mary Lovell and grew up in Shelton, Washington.
Coco attended grade school in Shelton and graduated from Irene S. Reed High School before pursuing higher education at Washington State College, where she earned a degree in recreation.
Her adventurous spirit led her to serve with the American Red Cross as a Doughnut Dolly in Korea at the close of the Korean conflict, a role she embraced with compassion and dedication. This commitment to service continued throughout her career, as she devoted herself to working with the American Girl Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls, serving as a professional staff member and camp director.
In her retirement, Coco brought her energy and kindness to disaster relief efforts, volunteering with the American Red Cross Disaster Services and FEMA. Her work took her across the country, offering aid and comfort to families in the wake of natural disasters.
Coco also found community and purpose in the Rome Grange, where she was an active member for 30 years. Her love for travel led her to live in England for many years, during which she explored much of Europe, enriching her life with cultural experiences and new friendships.
She is survived by her son, Edward "Rocky" Sylvester of Lacey, Washington, and her two beloved granddaughters, Lorna Espinosa and Simone Sylvester, of California.
Coco's legacy of service, love for adventure, and dedication to others will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew her.
