Dedicated to the citizens of Mason County, Washington since 1886
Stephen Luke Perry passed away at the age of 37 on Friday, September 9, 2024 in Belfair, WA. He now walks in ultimate freedom in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Born in Newberg Oregon on February 4, 1987 to Douglas and Cheryl (Perry) Sweeney, he was the third son to join the family, "completing the infield" as his dad would say. He spent his childhood in the PNW, chasing down foul balls at Snyder Park, and skateboarding at the Billie Johnson Skate Park in Kingston. He was always filled with adventure and yes, a bit of mischief!
Not a perfect man, he willingly entered recovery at Teen Challenge in Minneapolis, MN where he gave his heart to Jesus. After completing his program, he returned to the PNW where his hustle and drive earned him a spot with the Glaziers Local 188 union...and it was here that he found creative expression as a professional craftsman. A hard worker and someone who was always willing to lend a hand, he was soon chosen to go to New York City where he had the distinction of joining Shop Architects at 111 W. 57th Street, restoring the Steinway & Sons Piano Building on Manhattan's skyline. If you had asked Stephen if he thought he'd ever be working in the heart of New York City on Billionaires' Row, you would've been met with an emphatic and colorful rant about the merits of the simple life! That big city was not his cup of tea, but still he described his work on this historical landmark as a privilege and true experience of a lifetime.
Back in Seattle, after intense days of working on this city's skyscrapers, it was this yearning for an uncomplicated life that led him home to the tranquility of rural Mason County where he was building his dream off-grid cabin. He loved sky diving, hiking with friends, bridge climbing (much to his mom's dismay), or fishing and hanging out with family. He was also a fantastic cook, bringing some of the tastiest dishes to holidays along with cooking tips to match. Brave, loyal and generous to the core, Stephen made his unique and indelible mark on this world, and those of us lucky enough to have known him won't ever forget him.
He is survived by his mom Cheryl (Lon) Sweeney of Louisville KY, and two brothers, Scott (Grier) Perry of Bremerton, WA and John (Katie, the mother of John's children) Perry of Joyce, WA. A beloved uncle and revered for giving the best-ever piggy-back rides; he's survived by one nephew, Connor Perry and two nieces, McKenna Perry and Henrietta Perry. His aunts, uncles, cousins and dozens of friends and coworkers join us in remembering Stephen, honoring him, and celebrating his great, big life. He is preceded in death by his dad, Douglas Perry of Spokane Valley, WA.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to SOZO Church of Belfair where Stephen attended, was recently baptized and was loved dearly. A public memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 12 noon at SOZO Church of Belfair, 25140 SR 3, Belfair, WA. A potluck lunch will follow in the church fellowship hall. All are welcome.
