WWU honors Shelton High grad

Shelton High School graduate Kimy Peterson was named an Outstanding Graduate Student at Western Washington University for 2024.

The honor is awarded to one student in each graduate program or department, the university stated in a news release. The students are selected based on their leadership skills and the outstanding work done during their graduate studies.

Petersen earned a master of science degree in experimental psychology. Her work “Epistemology of Ignorance and the Invisibility of Indigenous Peoples” was nominated by faculty for the Western Association of Graduate School Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award this year.

Peterson will pursue her Ph.D at the University of California at Berkeley.

Back-to-School Festival for Shelton families

Families in the Shelton School District can pick up free lunch and resources at the district’s Back to School Festival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Olympic Middle School, 800 E. K St.

Freshmen, new student orientation in North Mason

The North Mason School District hosts orientation for freshmen and new students from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday in the North Mason High School gymnasium.

The orientation is for students only. Parents can direct their questions to Dannette Hull at 360-277-3003.

North Mason students in grades one through 12 return to school on Aug. 28. The first day for kindergarten students is Sept. 3.

Four candidates interview for board position

Four candidates for an open position on the Shelton School Board were interviewed Tuesday evening by the board in a study session at CHOICE High School in downtown Shelton.

The board is scheduled to vote to choose a new member at its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Elementary School. The new member of the five-member board will represent District 1.

Jessica Brissette, James Dale, Charles Flanagan and Keri Bell are seeking to replace Karla Knudsen-Johnston, who announced her resignation at the June 25 meeting.

The appointment to the board extends to the November 2025 election, when the position will appear on the ballot to fulfill the rest of the two-year unexpired term through 2027.

Stuff the bus

Pioneer School District recently hosted its “Stuff the Bus” event at Walmart in Shelton to get donated supplies in preparation for the upcoming school year. Pioneer Superintendent Jeff Davis called the donations “generous” and thanked supporters, organizer Pam Harrell and the Pioneer Kiwanis Club for their time and financial support.
