Dedicated to the citizens of Mason County, Washington since 1886
Marmo Gallery in downtown Shelton is asking people of all ages to create and submit a 4-by-6-inch postcard capturing something special about Shelton for an exhibit called "Community Correspondence."
The postcard exhibit will be displayed at the gallery in September and October.
The deadline is Sept. 6 to submit your postcard to the gallery at 217 West Cota St.
Gallery owner Isa Radojcic, who curates the shows at her business, said she's seen other cities sponsor postcard creation contests to promote their municipalities. The goal is "to explore and celebrate the essence of Shelton," she said.
She added, "I'm always looking for ways to engage with our community. And art is a great way to communicate with people and see their perspective."
Blank postcards can be purchased for $1 at Marmo. Your artwork on a 4-by-6-inch piece of cardboard stock will also be accepted. One side will be displayed. Any medium is welcome including drawing, painting, text, collage and embroidery.
Write your name, phone number and email address on the back of your postcard. One postcard will be made into a limited edition postcard for sale. The selected artist will receive 10 free copies. Participants don't have to live in Shelton.
In a statement, Radojcic wrote, "Marmo strives for inclusivity in our shows by including as many local artists as possible, as well as artists who are working at different levels of their careers and in different mediums. This is the first open-call show that we're holding, and we're excited to see all the new and different artists who may end up contributing. It's a chance for everyone to show their work, while celebrating our city."
An opening reception will be hosted from 3-7 p.m. Sept. 14. "Community Correspondence" will remain on display through the end of October.
