Timberlakes duo performs folk, poetry Sunday

The folk duo The Angel & The Outlaw combine harmonious folk tunes and original motorcycle poetry at 3 p.m. Sunday at a house party in Hoodsport.

Admission is a suggested donation of $15 to $20 per person. For reservations and the location of the show on Lake Cushman Road, call 360-877-5862. Bring a dish for the potluck.

The duo of Kathy Jonas and Craig Gurney met at a table at an open mic in Belfair in 2019 and began their musical and personal partnership. The couple married in 2020 and live in Timberlakes.

Jonas accompanies Gurney on guitar when he performs his "spoken-word songs." "Think Mark Twain in rhyme," Jonas said in an interview with the Journal.

"Our voices blend very well," she said. "His voice is very low and my voice is very high ... We often just sing three octaves apart."

Family legend has it that Jonas started singing when she was 3 months old, accompanying the choir at her parents' church. She began singing in the adult choir at age 8. When she was 14, she began singing and playing guitar solo at high school events, spaghetti feeds, classrooms and an occasional paid gig. She also played the flute and recorder in duets and quartets.

Jonas grew up enamored with 1960s folk music, songs by Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Ian and Sylvia and Tom Paxton. The duo plays songs by little-known composers, including their friends.

"We're not songwriters - we're song finders," Jonas said.

Jonas has recorded three CDs, "Bound Away" in 2026, "Into the Mystery" in 2017 and "Love is ... Still the Answer" in 2019.

Gurney was inspired to begin writing poetry on a motorcycle ride in 2011. Sometimes Jonas is along for the ride. Most of his road stories are told in rhyme.

Gurney talks to students in high school drama and English classes, encouraging them to embrace poetry. In a news release from the duo, his work is described as "storytelling that is similar to cowboy poetry by a modern-day saddle tramp riding an iron horse - a motorcycle." Gurney performs at open mics, casual gatherings and an occasional paid gig. He also has a recycled metal office on state Route 3 north of Shelton.
