High Steel Bridge fire

Fire crews are monitoring the area underneath the High Steel Bridge after a wildfire started there July 4, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

No active suppression is happening now because the terrain is too dangerous for firefighters, but the Vincent Creek fire appears to be out, Keith Alholm, public affairs specialist with Olympic National Forest, told the Journal.

“There are no active flames or smoke,” Alholm said.

A helicopter dumped water on the fire and engines sprayed water down at the flames from the bridge, according to the Forest Service.

The fire, directly below the High Steel Bridge on the northwest side of the south fork of the Skokomish River, was inaccessible by foot and stayed within its original footprint, according to a Forest Service news release.

The Le Bar Fire, which started July 6 above La Bar Horse Camp on NF 2340, is in a “mopping up” stage, according to Alholm.

He said crews are busy hand-turning material and cutting damaged trees to prevent flare-ups.

The 2-acre fire is under investigation and was likely human caused, according to the Forest Service.

“Visitors are asked to avoid Browns Creek Campground, Lower Skokomish Trailhead, and LeBar Horse Camp and surrounding areas. A closure order for the area is forthcoming,” the news release states.
