Letters to the Editor

Bad headline

Editor, the Journal,

Your sensational banner headline in the June 27 Journal did great disrespect to the facts.  A more accurate headline would have read "Incalculable Grief and Sorrow on the Skokomish Reservation" and would have better served.

Good policy

Editor, the Journal,

Congratulations on the success of your new policy concerning what you will print  in connection with letters to the editor.

I have been riveted by the many positive responses concerning local issues of importance to us all.

Keep up the good work.

Disheartening landscape

Editor, the Journal,

Isn't it disheartening how our political landscape often resembles high school drama? Both Democratic and Republican parties seem stuck in a cycle of internal conflict and personal attacks rather than focusing on real issues. Recently, I came across a troubling Facebook post from the current chair of the Mason County Republican Party, where she publicly criticized a county commissioner candidate and his campaign manager.

Attending one of their recent meetings only solidified my concerns. The atmosphere was rife with bickering, and it was clear that open-mindedness was in short supply, especially when it came to endorsing candidates. It's disappointing that independent thinkers and those outside certain circles are often overlooked or even ostracized.

We need political parties that prioritize substance over superficial alliances, and leadership that values inclusivity and constructive dialogue. These observations highlight a broader need for change in how our parties operate. Let's strive for a politics that uplifts diverse voices and focuses on the issues that truly matter to our communities.

Vote for Beckman

Editor, the Journal,

Tip Cap is Mason County's committee of citizens, businesses, and organizations established by the Mason County Commission to advise the commission on the one- and six-year transportation improvement projects. Other important contributions are traffic safety, public outreach meetings, and responding to public comments. I chaired Tip Cap for seven years. District 2 is not represented in Tip Cap. In fact, it has not had any representation since 2020. The Tip Cap committee position, District 2 Hoodsport/ Union RAC's vacancy has never been filled. This is District 2 commissioner Kevin Shutty's responsibility.

Commissioner Shutty has never been to a Tip Cap meeting or made sure his District 2 was properly represented. Eldon, Hoodsport, Lake Cushman, Potlatch, Dayton, Matlock, Union, parts of Shelton, Taylor Town, etc. are not, and have not been represented. That will not happen if you vote for Richard Beckman. Not only will your district be represented by two appointed Tip Cap members, but he will also be at committee meetings. We need a commissioner that cares about his district and the county. Please join me in voting for Richard Beckman, Mason County Commissioner District 2.

Jack Johnson, Belfair
