Sun Dog

Photographer Bob Bottman captured this photo of a sun dog, or sun halo, from his back yard near Skokomish Valley earlier this month. A sun dog is formed when sunlight is refracted by millions of hexagonal ice crystals suspended high in the atmosphere. Its radius, as viewed from Earth, is roughly the length of an outstretched hand at arm's length.
