Tupolo is 2A discus champion

Mary M. Knight’s Green wins 1B high jump title

North Mason High School junior Adrianna Tupolo became the first Bulldog to win a state girls track title in 30 years Friday.

Tupolo won the discus event at the 2A state Track & Field Championship meet Thursday to Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

"Coming back from finishing 8th in the discus last year at the state championship, I knew from the beginning of this season that Adrianna was ready to put in the work to make some serious progress," North Mason girls coach Lily Campbell wrote in an email to the Journal. "Not only is 'A' a tri-sport athlete and Running Start student at Olympic College, she is an exceptionally hard worker who has never shied away from a hard workout or pushing through a difficult technique. My philosophy is that every athlete, regardless of their history or ability, can gain a lot from focusing on the fundamentals. So, at the beginning of the season, A spent a lot of time breaking down all three throwing events into their different phases. We followed a natural progression of quantity of throws and incorporated a sprint/explosive workout every practice. Toward the end of the season, we spent a lot of time practicing the routine of a post-season meet.

A short throws warmup, followed by only 3-6 full throws to simulate a competition. Preparing mentally and physically for those high-pressure situations really paid off for A this season, and I couldn't be prouder of how she performed. The North Mason community is lucky to have such a deserving athlete bringing home a state championship, our track program's first in 11 years. We are all already looking forward to next season, the sky is the limit for her!"

Tupolo is the second North Mason girls athlete to win a state title this year, joining wrestler Sadie Evans who captured a title in February.

Tupolo also finished sixth in the javelin with a personal record throw of 116 feet, 1 inch and was 16th in the shot put with a throw of 27 and three-fourths inch.

North Mason's Blake Evans was 16th in the boys high jump at 5-6.
