North Mason stages 'Little Shop of Horrors'
The musical "Little Shop of Horrors" spotlights a mutating plant in a skid row florist shop that feeds on human blood and flesh while commanding "Feed me!!" and a sadistic dentist who saves the laughing gas for himself.
But the heart of the musical by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken is the love between the hapless florist Seymour Krelborn and his co-worker Audrey, a pretty blonde with a colorful fashion sense who's dating the abusive dentist.
"There's authenticity, but with the touch of ridiculousness," said Hilary Gennaro, the North Mason High School Drama Club adviser who directs the school's production, which opens tonight.
"Little Shop of Horrors" is staged at 7 p.m. tonight, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the school's theater at 150 E. North Mason School Road in Belfair. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students with ASB cards and children younger than 12.
Ronin Serrano - a freshman making his school stage debut - plays Seymour, Avery Barnes is Audrey, Andrew Helmich is Mushnik, Tobin Wing is the dentist and Grant Galbraith voices the plant, Audrey II. The cast features Daniel Larkin, Katalina Lopez Olson, Ysaunaa Hernandez, Emerson Lyons, Zara Bremm, Robert Cameron, Lux Ellis, Clara Galbraith, Jasmine Ballinger, Al Dill, Annie Gentry, Carra Gouldie, Rien Hicks, Emilie LaChester, Emerson Lyons, Audrey Peterson and Gwendolyn Updegrove.
The tech crew includes many of the performers and Maxx Burke, Lily Chambers, Romeo Gaynor, Johana Gomez, Jocelyn Graham, Marie Grange, Josy Hartness, Hailie Hembury, Dominik Hernandez, Tobias Krems, Blake Laes, Emerson Lyons, Orion Mayo, Grayson Middleton, Iris Musson, Dylan Overturf, Rylynn Rubottom and Nevaeh Waterman.
"Some of these kids want to be professional performers," Gennaro said, adding, "Come see some of our stars."
"Little Shop of Horrors" was first a movie released in 1960 and famously filmed in two days by director Roger Corman, who died a few weeks ago at age 98 after directing 55 and produced 385 films. In only his third film, Jack Nicholson played a masochistic dental patient.
The 1986 movie musical starred Rick Moranis as Seymour, Ellen Greens as Audrey and Steve Martin as the demented dentist.
