New council member selected Tuesday

The Shelton City Council on Tuesday evening selected Lyndsey Sapp to replace Joe Schmit on the seven-member council.

The council chose Sapp from four candidates following interviews at the work session at the Shelton Civic Center. Sapp will be sworn in at the council’s regular meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Schmit’s resignation was announced at the April 2 council meeting, giving the city 90 days to find a replacement. The term expires at the end of 2025, so the seat will be up for grabs in the November 2025 election.

In an interview with the Journal, Schmit said he resigned halfway through his second term because he wanted to work on long-term city policies and plans while most of the other council members, and the community, do not.

At the work session, the council interviewed four people who applied to fulfill the term representing seat #6: Sapp, Tiffany Anderson, Kathy McDowell and Dave Pierik.

Sapp has lived in the city for 2½ years. In her application for the position, she wrote, “As a mother of 5, I have experience managing a large army. With my knowledge and experience I feeI can help smooth out some of Shelton’s rough edges. I want to ensure that my children have a bright future to inherit when it’s time for them to become workers and leaders in this community.”
