Mason EDC selects new leader

Board cites Shutty's 'passion for our community'

Mason County Commissioner Kevin Shutty will be the new executive director of the Economic Development Council of Mason County.

Shutty replaces Jennifer Baria. He assumes his position May 1 and will continue in his role with the County Commission until his term expires at the end of this year.

The Shelton-based organization provides consultation to businesses establishing or relocating in Mason County. The agency states that its mission is "to expand and diversify the economy throughout Mason County by retaining and recruiting jobs, growing sustainable industry clusters, and promoting global competitiveness for Washington state."

"The EDC plays an important role in bringing the private and public sector together to support economic growth in Mason County," Shutty wrote to the Journal. "I am excited to continue serving our community in this new role as I work with the EDC's board of directors, members and dedicated staff to build the necessary partnerships to support projects to bring jobs and housing to our community."

"We are thrilled to have Mr. Shutty as the next EDC director," Amy Asher, EDC board member and chair of the hiring committee, said in a news release. "His extensive knowledge and passion for our community combined with his educational and professional background will serve the EDC and Mason County well."

"Kevin is a familiar face in our community and brings extensive expertise in economic development to the table," EDC Chair Geoff Farrington said in the release. "He will be a great leader for our organization."

Shutty and his wife, Catherine, live in Union. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary social studies education, a master's degree in community and economic development, and certifications in public leadership.

Shutty announced in February he will not seek another seat on the county commission representing District 2. Two downtown Shelton businessmen, Tom Beben and Richard Beckman, are running for the open seat.
