A student's view on homelessness
Editor, the Journal,
I am Summer and I am a senior at Shelton High School. I am writing to you about the homeless issue in Mason County to further spread awareness, if this sees print.
The issue we face as a community is considerable in size and many are uneducated about the topic. Currently, there are not enough shelters to accommodate the number of unhoused individuals, forcing those without housing to find camp elsewhere and trespass on private or public property without the proper permits or permission for camping.
There is a substantial public opinion on what is being done, including, but not limited to: not enough resources; it's worse in the city than it is in the rural areas; many people discriminate due to uneducation; and we get little to no government assistance on the issue. There was a spotlight event at the Civic Center in October trying to educate more people on the topic and in light of my public research I believe that was one step in the right direction to face this issue head-on.
There are measures we as a community can take to relieve some of the smaller issues, including sparing some change if possible, volunteering at shelters, working with the children who've been put in these unfortunate situations, and donations to shelters, including clothes and books.
Thank you for your time.

Vote on the clock
Editor, the Journal,
What do you think about this idea?
Ask everyone in the country to vote in a special election to choose how daylight saving time affects them.
The ballot choices might be:
■ Keep it the same, reset your clocks twice a year.
■ Change to DST at next scheduled occurrence and do not reset clocks any more.
■ Change to standard time at next scheduled occurrence and do not reset clocks any more.
Having this election before the 2024 presidential election might get people in a thinking and voting mood.
The issue seems independent of politics. The voice of the people would finally be heard and leave a good feeling of accomplishment.
