Mason County Republicans host county convention

Mason County Republicans elected 29 delegates and seven alternates at the county convention Feb 10 in the Shelton Civic Center.

State Sen. Drew MacEwen served as chairman and Pastor Bill Baker from Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Shelton gave opening remarks and a prayer.

"If I can quote a Democrat, Kennedy said, 'Ask what you can do for your country,' " Baker said.

"What do we choose to do with this day?" he asked.

Delegates will attend the Washington State Republican Convention in Spokane April 18 - 20.

County Republican Chair Melissa Upson told the Journal the convention "went very well."

About 110 people attended, with more that 70 who were delegates elected to the county convention at the January caucuses, she said.

"A new, and essential, role of the delegates at the state convention is to endorse candidates for significant positions such as governor, U.S. Senate, Congress and other statewide offices. Candidates who earn an endorsement at the state convention receive the comprehensive backing, resources and infrastructure of the Washington State Republican Party, along with our partner organizations," according to the county Republican website.

Delegates will be selected at the state convention to represent Washington at the national convention in Milwaukee July 15 - 18.
