Poets read works about salmon
Poets whose work is included in the anthology “I Sing the Salmon Home,” edited by former Washington Poet Laureate Rena Priest, will read at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Shelton Timberland Library.
Indianola resident Holly Hughes, co-owner of Empty Bowls Press and publisher of “I Sing the Salmon Home,” will emcee the reading. Hughes also writes poems about fish. The readers will also include Katy E. Ellis of Vashon Island, Cynthia Pratt of Lacey, Shelly Kirk-Rudeen of Olympia and Jeanette Barreca, reading the work of the late Olympia poet Bill Yake.
Also reading will be Ann Hursey of Mountlake Terrace, coordinator of the gathering of poets, who is the Writing for Land poet for the Capitol Land Trust’s Bayshore Preserve in a program that links poets with public lands.
Volunteers with Capitol Land Trust and Puget Sound Estuarium will be on hand as docents from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Johns Creek at the Bayshore Preserve, and during the same hours Nov. 10-12. They will answer questions and describe the trust’s work to improve salmon habitat on the preserve. Salmon-watchers are asked not to bring dogs to streamside trails, which also include the Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail at the Mason/Thurston county border on U.S. Highway 101 and Goldsborough Creek in Shelton.
Local vendors at Hoodsport Bazaar
A Christmas Bazaar is hosted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the community room at St. Germain Episcopal Church, 600 Lake Cushman Road, Hoodsport.
Local vendors offer items that include handmade crafts, decorations and stocking stuffers. Refreshments are available.
Holiday Bazaar at senior center
The Mason County Senior Activities Association hosts a Holiday Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Pavilion, 190 W. Sentry Drive, Shelton.
More than 50 vendors offer seasonal decorations, handmade quilts and knitting, holiday baskets, jewelry, hand-tooled leather items, wooden décor and toys, silver and turquoise jewelry and pottery. Senior center members will sell homemade baked goods, and coffee and other beverages are available. All proceeds benefit the association. Holiday Bazaar at Allyn church
St. Hugh Episcopal Church, 280 E. Wheelwright in Allyn, hosts its annual Holiday Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Items include colorful driftwood and seashell art, seasonal arrangements, soup mixes, handmade item and baked goods. Silent auction items include a Trader Joe’s Italian dinner basket, a Seattle Seahawks basket and a karaoke machine.
Learn about consumer fraud
Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club hosts a free consumer fraud seminar at 4 p.m. Nov. 8 at its clubhouse at 330 E. Country Club Drive E. in Union.
Elena G. Huizar, consumer protection outreach services supervisor for the state Attorney General’s Office, will present information about common scams the Attorney General’s Office sees and will help identify red flags to protect people from fraud. Attendees can ask questions, but the Attorney General’s Office does not provide individual legal advice or specific complaint information.
Donate shoeboxes filled with gifts
Starting Nov. 13, Calvary Fellowship of Shelton at 50 E. Island Lake Road will start accepting shoeboxes filled with gifts as part of the worldwide Operation Christmas Child collection.
According to the organization Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child since 1993 has collected and delivered more than 209 million gift-filled show boxes to children ages 2-14 in more than 170 countries and territories.
The boxes can be delivered to Calvary Fellowship from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 13, 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 14, 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 15, 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 16, noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18, 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 19, and 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 20.
Mason General fundraiser Nov. 17
The Mason General Hospital Foundation hosts its Business Luncheon and Confections Auction from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Ridge Motorsports Park at 1060 West Eels Hill Road, Shelton.
Tickets are $60, or $525 for a table of 10. Doors open at 11 a.m. and a buffet lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. by local chefs Tom Beben and Monica Carvajal-Beben, followed by an auction of desserts from noon to 1 p.m. The money raised will fund a Steris 4085 general surgical table and a new Stryker LD304 birthing bed.
Film screening benefits children
The Donnie J O’Neill Guild hosts the film “Trolls Band Together” at 11 a.m. Nov. 18 at Shelton Cinemas.
