Shelton woman killed by DUI driver

A Shelton motorcyclist died after being struck by a suspected drunken driver on state Route 16 near Gig Harbor on Oct. 7.

Shelton resident Alicia Perrin, 30, died at the scene after her motorcycle was struck by Mecca Kay Berkin, 54, of Federal Way.

Berkin was speeding on the wrong side of the road when she struck Perrin, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Perrin's boyfriend was riding another motorcycle and managed to dodge Berkin's 2014 Honda Civic, according to charging documents.

Trooper Shannon McKenzie said he found Berkin's severely damaged car and Perrin's distraught boyfriend standing next to her body when he arrived at the scene of the collision.

McKenzie reported he smelled alcohol in Berkin's car and noted Berkin's eyes were bloodshot and watery and she had slurred speech but Berkin denied drinking alcohol.

McKenzie applied for a warrant to sample Berkin's blood and toxicology results are pending.

Berkin was charged in Pierce County with vehicular homicide.
