Dedicated to the citizens of Mason County, Washington since 1886
On June 16, 2023, Frank Gray took an evening walk, came home, sat down to rest and quietly passed away without struggle, at the age of 86.
Frank was born to Grover and Lucile Gray on February 18, 1937 in Kent, WA. His family moved to Hoodsport, WA in 1939. On June 1st he celebrated his 60th anniversary of marriage to Barbara (Hays) Gray. Frank is survived by: Barbara, their three children, Carl Gray, Gina Lindblom, and Katie Hall, his five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with one on the way. He is also survived by his sister Faith Spencer. Preceded in death are his brother Oliver Gray and sister, Rachel Endicott.
Frank accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 13 and walked faithfully with the Lord, leaving a quiet example of a life well lived. He attended Multnomah School of the Bible in 1957-1958, where he met the love of his life, Barbara. Frank served in the Army from 1960 to 1962, where he was awarded the "Expert Bayonet Medal" in 1961. His courtship with Barbara consisted of writing letters while he was in the U.S. Army. They married upon his return home.
Frank's local work history began at the Forest Service in the 1950's. He went on to become a road builder for Camp Govey for 22 years. An interview with Frank detailing his work history at Camp Govey can be found on YouTube under "Camp Govey interview #1, Frank Gray". He did seasonal work at Hunter's Christmas Tree Farms in Shelton, and later worked as a mail carrier for the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton. He retired in 2002.
Frank's interests included: hunting, fishing, hiking, old bottle digging, and buying and selling antiques. In his early years he trapped and later led history classes on "Trapping in the Old Days" and participated in the local Historical Society. Frank was a faithful member of Hood Canal Community Church most of his life, serving as a Deacon for decades. Frank loved his family deeply, and everyone loved him, including his community and church. Frank served the Lord faithfully in quiet ways behind the scenes. His favorite hymn was "Blessed Assurance".
Frank's memorial service will be Saturday, July 1st, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Hood Canal Community Church in Hoodsport. A reception will follow.
