Nine receive Mason Health scholarships

Mason Health awarded full-ride medical pathways scholarships to nine students from Shelton High School's Health Sciences Academy.

The students were honored at a presentation May 10 at Mason General Hospital. The number of scholarships increased from the six presented last year in the first year of the program.

Mason Health and the Shelton School District have partnered to increase the number of health care workers in Mason County, and help students continue their education.

The scholarship recipients in phlebotomy are Dolores Andres-Gervacio, 18; Anthony Castaneda Martin, 17; Pedro Jimenez, 18; and Milo Young, 18. Receiving scholarships in registered nursing are Wyatt Anthis, 18; Henry Gomez Cruz, 18; and Heaven Smith, 17.

Olivia Henry, 18, received a scholarship in the medical assistant program. Feona Caxhandra Suson Medina, 17, received a scholarship for the certified nursing program.

Upon completing their programs, the scholarship winners will be offered a position at Mason Health if a position is open, Mason Health states.

"For the Shelton School District, really any public school system, this is the way of doing business," Shelton School District Superintendent Wyeth Jessee said in a news release. "With partnerships like this with Mason Health, we are able to say, 'What do you need as an employer and how do we adapt the skills we're teaching to make sure our students have the right experiences?' "

"Mason Health was so impressed with the caliber of young adults who applied for the scholarships," Mason Health Chief Nursing Officer Melissa Strong wrote in a news release. "They all did amazing things during the interviews. We increased the number of scholarships available so we could remove barriers for any of our communities of youth to embark on a career path with Mason Health. We hope by removing financial barriers, they will be able to focus on school and learning what they need to become successful, productive adults that remain in our community."

Mason Health is celebrating its 55th year.
