Hood Canal basketball teams reflect on season

The Hood Canal girls and boys basketball teams showed improvement throughout the 2022-23 season.

According to Hood Canal School Assistant Principal Steven Torres, the girls team finished 8-3 after starting out 1-2.

"The girls were competitive and fought hard regardless of the competition," Torres wrote in an email. "The girls were led by eighth-graders Autumn Wily, Rosa Leclair-Hernandez, Maliyah Sandoval and numerous other key contributors. This season the girls team showed its ability to play as a team, outhustle opponents down the stretch and show tremendous Orca pride. We are extremely proud of our Orca players."

The boys basketball team finished 2-4 and battled through a tough season.

"It was amazing to see the physical growth, character building, and mental toughness come through from each and every one of our players," Torres said. "With most of the games on the road, the boys fought tough each week to make the games a close contest."

The boys ended the season with a third-place finish at the Crusader Classic Tournament at Evergreen Christian School.

"Eighth-graders Sharkey French led the team in points with Dallas Escobar leading the team in assists, Greg Marden added some big three-point shots when needed to keep the games tight," Torres said. "Throughout the season, the boys team showed a very promising display of young talent, grit and Orca pride."
