Celebrate Earth Day Saturday by helping remove trash from a Tahuya forest or plant trees and shrubs at the new site of the Shelton Farmers Market.
Volunteers can help plant native plants, fruit trees and shrubs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday next to the Shelton Civic Center, 425 W. Cota St. The Mason Conservation District, the Shelton Skookum Rotary Club, Shelton Youth Connection, the Shelton Farmers Market and the City of Shelton are sponsoring the event.
In collaboration with the state Department of Natural Resources, Gambler 500 and the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, the Mason County-based group TrashMash! Litter Posse hosts an Earth Day cleanup beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers can gather at the DNR staging area at Oak Patch. Turn west off Northeast Elfendahl Pass at the next forest road north of Goat Ranch Road/Camp Pond. A map and itinerary are available when RSVPing at http://www.WhereWaterfallsAre.com.
The cleanup will begin with a safety talk and the distribution of bags, maps and nitrite gloves. Participants are encouraged to wear leather or other sturdy gloves, a hard hat and closed-toe shoes. Feel free to bring bags, trash grabbers, a steel rake, hay fork or shovel.
A portable toilet will be onsite. Lunch will be provided.
The group's cleanups continue with Collins Creek and/or Seal Rock campgrounds May 18, and sites to be announced June 1, July 6, Aug. 17 and Sept. 7.
