Shelton educator earns honor

Shelton resident Ellen Shortt Sanchez, director of the Center for Community Based Learning and Action at The Evergreen State College, was selected as the 2023 Continuums of Service Western Region Community Engaged Professional.

The award was conferred at the group's regional conference March 14-17 in Honolulu.

A Shelton resident since 1990, Shortt was recognized for her commitment to providing leadership on campus to foster civic/community engagement. She also was recognized for building sustainable and reciprocal partnerships, supporting the success of underrepresented students, and preparing students for civic and social responsibility.

Before her current position, Shortt coordinated the Shelton School District's Even Start program. Prior to that, she was an English as a Second Language instructor at Olympic College Shelton.

Scholarships for Harstine residents

The Harstine Island Women's Club and the Judy and Charles Chase Scholarship Fund Management Committee are offering scholarships to full-time residents of Harstine island entering or continuing their post-high school education.

Applicants must have obtained a diploma with an accredited high school program or earned a GED. Applications will be accepted through May 15. Winners will be announced by May 31.

The number and amount of the scholarships will be determined at the time the scholarship recipients are selected.

Shelton Kiwanis Club offers scholastic aid

April 30 is the deadline to apply for a scholarship from the Shelton Kiwanis Club.

They are also available from school counselors.

The scholarship categories are education, general academic, life sciences, CTE (vocational/technical) and nursing.

Harstine theater offers $500 in aid

The Harstine island Theatre Club is offering a $500 scholarship.

Applications and guidelines are available at CHOICE, Cedar, Shelton, Mary M. Knight and North Mason high schools, and at Olympic College Shelton. Aug. 1 is the deadline to apply, and the winner will be announced by Aug. 15.

Charlie's Vision has money for education

Charlie's Vision, a local nonprofit group, is again offering a $1,000 scholarship to any senior who is graduating from a local high school, private school or homeschooling who is considering a career in law enforcement. OCCU offers scholarships

April 30 is the deadline for local graduating high school seniors to apply for seven $1,000 scholarships offered by Our Community Credit Union.

The scholarships are open to graduating 2023 high school seniors who attend school in Mason, Grays Harbor and Thurston counties, and on Vashon Island. The students must be a member of OCCU to be eligible.
