Sadie Evans earns spot at Mat Classic XXXIV
North Mason senior Jake Mathews won the 152-pound tournament at the Region 2 2A wrestling tournament Saturday in Belfair.
Mathews won his opening match by pin in 18 seconds against Washington's Kai'lee Hale before earning a technical fall win against Orting's Talgat Aldabergen. Mathews defeated Bremerton's Brennan Galloway by a 14-4 major decision to capture the title.
North Mason junior Pedro Salvador finished second in the 145-pound tournament. Salvador earned an opening victory by pin against White River's Trevor King and pinned White River's Caleb Dale in the semifinals. He lost in a 7-4 decision against Orting's Matthew Gore in the championship match.
North Mason's Blake Evans finished fifth in the 126-pound tournament and Charles Broughton placed fifth at 138 pounds and are the first alternates to the state tournament. Carlos Atencio earned sixth place at 170 pounds and Sean Ferber finished sixth in the 132-pound tournament after going down with an injury in the consolation semifinals.
The Bulldogs finished sixth as a team. Salvador and Mathews will compete at the Mat Classic on Friday and Saturday in the Tacoma Dome.
Evans finishes third to reach state
North Mason's Sadie Evans finished third in the 155-pound tournament at the girls 1B/2B/1A/2A Region 1 wrestling competition Saturday at Sedro-Woolley High School.
Evans won her opening match by a 20-6 decision against Blaine's Analicea Ordonez. She fell in the semifinals to Mount Baker's Sydney VanBrocklin by pin.
Evans bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a win by pin against Steliacoom's Amina Thomas before defeating East
Jefferson's Melody Douglas by pin in the third place match.
Evans will compete at the Mat Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.
