Sheltonʼs Squire signs with Clark College for softball
Danyka Squire is officially set to compete at the next level.
Squire, a senior multisport athlete at Shelton High School, has signed a letter of intent to compete in softball at Clark College in Vancouver, beginning in the fall.
"I'm really excited," said Squire, who plays catcher. "It wasn't something that I always planned on my entire life because I do struggle with anxiety, but proving to myself that I can do it and sticking with it over the years is super exciting to me and the one thing I love about it most is little kids want to be like me now."
Squire, who also competes for the Highclimbers' volleyball and girls basketball teams in addition to softball, was a member of the Shelton-Mason County Journal's All-County softball team as a junior. She has also been named Libero of the Year on the Journal's All-County volleyball team the past three seasons.
"I always make a joke about it, their practices start at 1 p.m., but I did love the coach and I loved the environment and I love that it's not too far from home," Squire said about choosing the Penguins.
Clark competes in the South Division of the Northwest Athletic Conference. The Division also includes Lower Columbia and Centralia.
Squire said she plans to either go to dental school or become a teacher after graduating from college.
During the club season, Squire competes for Underground U18, playing catcher and shortstop.
Before she heads south, Squire will finish her senior year for the Highclimbers this spring.
"We have a few new freshmen that are playing and other teams have lost some of their big seniors over the years so I'm hoping we can go to districts this year," Squire said. "I'm really excited."
