Resource Fair in Hoodsport Jan. 18

A Rural Community Resource Fair is hosted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 18 at 331 N. Finch Creek Road, Hoodsport.

General support services are available regarding mental health, physical and oral health, vaccinations, rental and utility assistance, veterans’ assistance, food benefits and meals, transportation assistance, insurance navigation, housing assistance, educational support, financial fitness, free civil law aid, and more.

Participating agencies include Behavioral Health Resources, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington, Choice Regional Health Network, Community Action Council, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 22, DSHS, Family Education Support Services, Mason Conservation District, Mason Transit Authority, Molina Healthcare, National Alliance on Mental Illness, New Directions Counseling, Northwest Resources/SOS, Olympic Health and Recovery Services, Olympic College, Peninsula Community Health Services, Peninsula Credit Union, Sea-Mar, Shelton Family YMCA, Sound Learning, South Sound Parent to Parent, The Arc, Thurston County Regional Library, Timberland Regional Library, Turning Pointe Survivor Advocacy Center and Youth Connection.

City seeks Parks & Rec board member

The City of Shelton seeks volunteers for its Parks and Recreation Citizen Advisory Committee.

The group, which meets monthly, provides the city with recommendations on future park planning and improvements, recreation program services, regulations and rules of use for city park facilities.

Applicants must live in Mason County. Submit a letter either by mail or in person to the Shelton Civic Center, 525 W. Cota St. For more information, contact Parks and Recreation Facilities Director Mark Ziegler at 360-432-5194 or [email protected].

Share family history with historical group

The Mason County Historical Society is developing a family history of archives of past and present residents of Mason County.

Anyone who wants to share a record of their time in Mason County can fill out and return a form that includes your name, where you were born, children, spouse, education, military service and occupation. You can also fill out forms for other family members and friends.

Visitors to the Mason County Historical Museum often ask questions about their ancestors.

Forms are available at the museum at 427 West Railroad Ave. in downtown Shelton, by calling 360-426-1020 and at http://www.masoncountyhistoricalsociety.org.

In 1938, Shelton-Mason County Journal Editor Grant Angle used the same form to compile a history of early settlers in the county.

Learn about Medicare

Seniors new to Medicare are welcome to learn more about the program in person from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Mason County Senior Activities Center, 190 W, Sentry Drive, Shelton.

The center also offers free Zoom “Welcome to Medicare” presentations by appointment, from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 17 and from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 19. To register to reserve a Zoom webinar spot, email [email protected].

24 students named to honor roll

Twenty-four Cedar High School students earned spots on the honor roll for the first trimester of this school year. To be eligible, the student must earn a GPA of 3.0 or better.

The students are:

Olympic College offers courses

Olympic College Shelton is offering courses in creative writing, flagger certification and forklift certification.

The class “Creative writing — Making scenes” is conducted from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays Jan. 25 through Feb. 23. The class explores how to develop scenes through selling, exposition, action, conversation, pacing and clarity. Sign up by calling 360-432-5400 or at http://www.tinyurl.com/4e8hv8jj.

The class on flagger certification is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Become a certified flagger by learning safety for employees and the public and how to manage interference from vehicles and pedestrian traffic, proper use of traffic control devices and other flagger duties. Certification will be issued the same day after passing the examination.

The class on forklift certification is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 25. Learn to maneuver a forklift through an obstacle course. The instruction includes machine design, product handling, pre-shift inspection and on-site logistics. Review WISHA and OSHA requirements. Certification will be issued upon successful completion.

Jan. 25 deadline for school board

The deadline is 5 p.m. Jan. 25 to apply for an open position on the Shelton School Board following the death of Marty Best.

Applicants must reside in the director District 2. To be eligible, applicants must also be a U.S. citizen, be a qualified voter, and be able to read and write in English. Applications are evailable on the district’s website, sheltonschools.org.

Shelton native exceling

Emma Anderson of Shelton earned a spot on the dean’s list for the fall semester at Lasell University.To be eligible, a student must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher while completing at least 12 credits as a full-time student.
