Free parks days announced

Discover Pass free days for 2023 were announced by lands managed by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, state Parks and Recreation Commission and state Department of Natural Resources.

The first date to mark on the calendar is Jan. 16, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Other free days include March 9 and 19, April 22, June 10, 11 and 19, Sept. 23, Oct. 10, Nov. 11 and 24.

National Parks, including Olympic National Park and Mount Rainier National Park, are also free to the public on Jan. 16.

Olympic National Park updates campground reservations

Olympic National Park released updated campground reservation guidelines for summer 2023.

According to an ONP Facebook post, all campgrounds will be open May 25 to Sept. 20. Kalaloch Campground will help visitors by staggering reservations. The campground will be releasing campsites in a series of three staggered block releases by loop. Block releases for A and B loop campsites will be available six months in advance, C and D loop campsites will be available two weeks in advance and E and F loop campsites will be available four days in advance.

The Hoh campground season is May 25 to Sept. 20 and will have a similar booking window to the Kalaloch campground. A loop campsites will be available for reservation six months in advance, C loop campsites will be available for reservations two weeks in advance and B loop campsites will be available four days in advance.

At the Mora Campground, A, B and E loop campsites will be available for reservations six month in advance. C loop campsites will be available for reservations two weeks in advance and D loop campsites will be available for reservations four days in advance.

Fairholme Campground will also follow the block releases for campsites. B loop campsites and the majority of the walk-to-sites will be available for reservation six months in advance. C loop campsites and most of the remaining walk-to-sites will be available to reserve two weeks in advance. A loop campsites and walk-to-site 85 will be available to reserve four days in advance.

Olympic National Park recommends going to http://www.recreation.gov and search for the campground to find your campsite and reserve a campsite when available.
