General election results certified

MacEwen elected to replace Tim Sheldon

Mason County general election results were certified Nov. 29 by the county’s canvassing board.

A new auditor will be handling elections in 2023. Republican challenger Steve Duenkel will begin his term in January after receiving 14,739 votes for 50.58% of the total. Democratic incumbent Paddy McGuire received 14,379 votes for 49.35%.

Mason County will also have a new clerk in Republican Charles Rhodes, who received 14,727 votes for 50.82% of the total. Democratic incumbent Sharon Moore-Fogo received 14,223 votes for 49.08%. 

One incumbent who will be serving another term is Mason County Assessor Patti McLean, who received 15,990 votes for 55.44% of the total. Republican challenger George Blush received 12,804 votes for 44.4%. Also earning reelection was county Commissioner Sharon Trask. The Republican will represent District No. 3 for another four years after receiving 16,207 votes for 55.95% of the total. Democratic challenger Miguel Gutierrez received 12,680 votes for 43.78%.

In unopposed races, Jaime Taylor will be the Mason County coroner again with 20,538 votes for 94.98% of the total. Michael Dorcy will serve another term as Mason County prosecutor after garnering 20,074 votes for 95.29% of the total. Lisa Frazier will remain as Mason County treasurer after gathering 19,584 votes for 93.88% of the total.

Ryan Spurling will be the new Mason County sheriff after receiving 20,608 votes for 95.57% of the vote. Spurling will replace Casey Salisbury, who is retiring. George Steele was reelected as a Mason County District Court Judge, receiving 17,796 votes for 95.94% of the total.

In Legislative races, Republican Drew MacEwen was elected to the Senate to represent the 35th District after receiving 41,828 votes for 56.06% of the total. Democrat Julianne Gale received 32,705 votes for 43.84%. In Mason County, MacEwen received 16,723 votes for 57.09% of the total.

Republican Dan Griffey was reelected to represent the 35th District in Position 1, receiving 43,938 votes for 58.98% of the total. Democratic challenger James DeHart received 30,459 votes for 40.89%. In Mason County, Griffey received 17,485 votes for 59.78% of the total.

Republican Travis Couture was elected to represent the 35th District in Position 2, receiving 39,445 votes for 53.11% of the total. Democratic challenger Sandy Kaiser received 34,762 votes for 46.81%. In Mason County, Couture received 15,675 votes for 53.93%. 

Democrat Steve Hobbs will serve his first full term as Secretary of State beginning in 2023. Hobbs received 1,468,521 votes for 49.77% of the total. Julie Anderson received 1,351,926 votes for 45.82%. In Mason County, Anderson received 15,601 votes for 54.62%. 

In federal races, Derek Kilmer will again represent Congressional District 6, receiving 208,710 votes for 60% of the total. Republican Elizabeth Kreiselmaier received 138,754 votes for 39.89%. In Mason County, Kreiselmaier received 14,725 votes for 50.13%.

Democrat Patty Murray will work another term as U.S. senator. Murray received 1,741,827 votes for 57.15% of the state total. Republican Tiffany Smiley received 1,299,322 votes for 42.63%. In Mason County, Smiley received 15,612 votes for 52.97%.

According to the Mason County Auditor’s reconciliation form, 29,938 ballots were received and 29,638 ballots were accepted and 300 ballots were not counted. During the election, 1,228 replacement ballots were requested and issued and of those, 633 were returned and 622 were counted, with 11 ballots being rejected.

Mason County had a 67.52% voter turnout.
