North Mason's Addilyn Varick runs up to toss the javelin during her final throw at the State 2A track and field meet Thursday at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
North Mason senior Addilyn Varick saved her best for last to earn second place in the state 2A girls javelin throw Thursday at Mount Tahoma High School.
Varick's final throw of her high school career measured 116 feet, 4 inches, a personal best and good enough to take second place. Tumwater's Natalie Sumrok won the state title with a toss of 126 feet, 2 inches.
"It felt really nice because I've been dealing with really bad rib issues all season and that one was probably my best because I was able to just let it go knowing it was my last one," Varick told the Journal just after the event. "That's just exciting for me. I'm so happy because I didn't even have a sophomore season and I've worked so hard to try and get here and I'm happy I did and I'm glad I did so well."
After winning the Olympic League and district titles, Varick came into the event in the top eight of throwers.
A coach at Eastern Washington University said Varick would be a walk-on to the track team if she threw at least 115 feet this season.
"I'm going to email her about that now hoping that she'll take me," Varick said.
Adrianna Tupolo was a late entry into the state 2A javelin competition and had a best throw of 91 feet. Varick was happy to represent North Mason and hopes Tupolo will continue to improve and be another name in a long line of North Mason javelin throwers.
"It's exciting because North Mason, we've had amazing javelin throwers in the past and I'm just glad I'm able to keep it going," Varick said. "Now hopefully, Adrianna, the girl who threw today will keep it going to because she was a freshman. If she made it as a freshman, I hope she'll just keep getting better."
North Mason's Tanza Tupolo finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 5 inches. Adrianna Tupolo also competed in the discus and finished 10th with a throw of 96 feet. Adrianne Tupolo finished 15th in the triple jump with a leap of 30 feet, 6.75 inches.
Averie DuPont finished 11th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.95 seconds, a personal record. She finished 14th in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.45 seconds. Kezlie Thygesen placed 12th in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 12:07.18.
The North Mason 4x100 relay team of Trent Petersen, Dakota Filer, Avery Ballein and Alexander Rank were disqualified during the preliminaries.
