Primary races set

Mason County Commissioner Sharon Trask faces two challengers in the Aug. 2 primary election: Miguel Gutierrez, a first-term member of the Shelton City Council, and Mark Carlson.

The two top vote-getters will face off in the general election Nov. 8. Trask and Carlson are Republicans, and Gutierrez is a Democrat.

Mason County auditor and assessor, and seats representing the 35th Legislative District, are also up for grabs in the primary. Friday was the deadline for candidates to apply for election at the Mason County Auditor’s Office.

Incumbent Mason County Assessor Patti McLean, who states no

party preference, will face George Blush, a Republican. Last year, Blush lost by five votes to Gutierrez in his bid for a seat on the Shelton City Council.

Incumbent Mason County Auditor Paddy McGuire, a Democrat, faces Republican Steve Duenkel. Mason County Clerk Sharon K. Moore-Fogo, a Democrat, will face Republican challenger Charles G. Rhodes.

Mason County Treasurer Elisabeth Frazier is running unopposed. Ryan Spurling, the chief criminal deputy of patrol operations for the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, is also running unopposed in his bid to replace Sheriff Casey Salisbury, who is retiring.

Mason County Prosecutor Michael Dorcy and Coroner Jaime Taylor aren’t facing challengers.

Longtime state Sen. Tim Sheldon, D-Potlatch, is retiring, opening a seat representing the 35th District in the Senate. Republican Drew MacEwen, who is representing the district as a state representative in Position 2, filed for that position, as did Democrat Julianne Gale of Shelton.

Four people have filed for MacEwen’s open position: Republicans Patti Case of Union, Tiffany Sevruk of Olympia and Travis Couture of Allyn, and Democrat Sandy Kaiser of Shelton.

State Rep. Dan Griffey, R-Allyn, who holds Position 1 in District 35, will face Democrat James DeHart of Shelton.

The following candidates have filed to run for countywide offices in Mason County for the 2022 election. Races with more than two candidates will be on the Aug. 2, 2022 primary election ballot. The top-two vote getters, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the Nov. 8 general election. Races with two candidates or those running unopposed will advance directly to the general election. (I = incumbent)
