Public invited to academy opening

The Shelton School District hosts the official opening of its Manufacturing Engineering and Technology Academy building at Shelton High School from 4 to 6 p.m. May 25.

Staff will offer tours of the new building. The Shelton-Mason Chamber of Commerce will present a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Students will demonstrate the equipment at 5:10 and 5:35 p.m.

Translation services are available. The Shelton High School Band will perform. While supplies last, free books and merchandise are available. Refreshments will be served.

Drive a school bus Saturday at job fair

Ever wonder what it feels like to drive a 40-foot vehicle that weighs between 30,000 to 35,000 pounds?

You have a chance this weekend when the Mason County Transportation Cooperative, operates the school buses for the Shelton, Southside and Pioneer school districts, hosts a job fair from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of Oakland Bay Junior High School in Shelton.

Don Hall, the director of transportation, said he hopes the event draws people who are interested in driving a school bus.

"There's a huge shortage of drivers," Hall said. He added, "It's something going on statewide, nationwide."

Substitute drivers are driving two routes, he said.

Applicants must be 21 or older, have driven for at least five years, earned a high school diploma or GED, be able to pass a commercial driver's physical, and pass a drug screening, Hall said. Even though marijuana is legal in the state, its presence in your body will eliminate you from contention, he said.

At the job fair, participants will get the chance to drive around the parking lot with a trained driver, and back the vehicle up, Hall said.

Five will be inducted into Hall of Fame

Ricardo Del Bosque, Jamie Dobson, Chris McGee, Connie Jo Nelson and Doug Sells will be inducted into the Shelton School District & Community Hall of Fame at 5:30 p.m. June 7 in the Shelton High School Performing Arts Center.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Harstine theater group offers scholarship

The Harstine Island Theatre Club is offering a $500 scholarship.

Applications and guidelines are available at CHOICE, Cedar, Shelton, Mary M. Knight and North Mason high schools, and at Olympic College Shelton. Aug. 1 is the deadline to apply, and the winner will be notified by Aug. 15.
