Public invited to academy opening
The Shelton School District is having its official opening of the Manufacturing Engineering and Technology (MET) Academy building at Shelton High School from 4 to 6 p.m. May 25.
Staff will offer tours of the building and the Shelton-Mason Chamber of Commerce will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Students will demonstrate the equipment at 5:10 and 5:35 p.m.
Translation services are available. The Shelton High School Band will perform. While supplies last, free books and swag are available. Refreshments will be served.
Three SHS grad receive scholarships
Shelton High School graduates Ryan Mackiewicz, Faith Linthicum and Lucas Larson are recipients of the Shelton High School 2022 H. Parry Jones Scholarships.
The H. Parry Jones Scholarship is managed by the Shelton Schools Foundation, a nonprofit foundation with the goal to improve educational opportunities for students in the Shelton School District. Volunteers manage the foundation.
Mackiewicz was awarded $50,000 over a four-year period, and Linthicum and Larson both received a $25,000 award to be used over four years of college.
Mackiewicz, the son of Andrea Welander and William Mackiewicz, is interested in pursuing a degree in environmental science. He plans to attend Oregon State University, where he will major in biology.
Linthicum is the daughter of Mark and Ruth Linthicum. She will major in biology at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey. She will continue her studies in premed, with aspirations to become a neurologist and study Alzheimer’s disease.
Larson is the son of Brian and Victoria Forbes Larson. He plans to attend Washington State University, where he has been accepted into the pharmacy program.
The scholarships come from a donation from the Marjory Jones Charitable Trust honoring the family of Parry Jones, who worked for many years in the grocery department of Lumbermen’s Mercantile in downtown Shelton during the early to mid-1900s.
Scholarships for Olympic College
Two Mason County residents will receive the Betsy Hankin Memorial Scholarship, which will provide one year of tuition and fees to Olympic College.
Students must be enrolled in at least six credits per quarter, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and demonstrate financial need. Students who intend to remain in Mason County will receive preference.
Applicants must ask these essay questions: Do you intend to stay in Mason County after graduation? If so, how do you plan to use your education to make a positive contribution to the community?
Sunday is the deadline to apply. Winners will be announced by May 31.

Harstine theater group offers scholarship
The Harstine Island Theatre Club is offering a $500 scholarship.
Applications and guidelines are available at CHOICE, Cedar, Shelton, Mary M. Knight and North Mason high schools, and at Olympic College Shelton. Aug. 1 is the deadline to apply, and the winner will be notified by Aug. 15. Scholarships available to Harstine residents
The Harstine Island Women’s Club and the Judy and Charles Chase Memorial Endowment are offering scholarships to full-time residents of Harstine Island who are entering or continuing their post-high school education.
Applicants must have earned a diploma from an accredited high school or a GED. Friday is the deadline to apply, and winners will be announced by May 31. The number and amount of the scholarships will be determined by the time the scholarship recipients are selected.

State: No snow makeup days for North Mason
June 17 remains the last day of the school year for the North Mason School District after the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction granted the district’s request to waive two snow days in January. June 17 will be a half day of instruction for all grades in the district.
Local students earn degrees at Utah State
Two students from Shelton are among the 6,588 candidates for graduation during the spring commencement at Utah State University.
Kiara Budge earned a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts. Jacob Hanes earned a Master of Education degree in physical and sport education from USU Brigham City.
