City awards two street design contracts

The Shelton City Council on Tuesday awarded two design contracts to a Tacoma company to design the repaving of Brockdale Road, and Safe Routes to School to help students walking near Oakland Bay Junior High, Evergreen Elementary School, and Shelton, CHOICE and Cedar high schools.

RH2 Engineering will receive a maximum of $161,238 to design both projects. The council gave preliminary approval at its Feb. 1 meeting.

The city advertised the need for design services for both projects in August, and received responses from five firms in October.

No one from the public commented on the measure, nor did any member of the council. The measure passed unanimously.

The city received $278,000 in federal funding in April and will use it for a hot mix asphalt overlay on Brockdale Road from Wallace Kneeland Boulevard to Batstone Cutoff Road.

In July, the city received a $770,103 state Safe Routes to School grant. The city will use the money for design and construction at four locations.

The intersection at Franklin and Seventh streets will receive curb extensions on both sides of all four corners, with pedestrian crosswalk markings on legs of the intersection. A rectangular rapid flashing beacon will be erected across Seventh Street on the north side of the intersection. An American with Disabilities Act curb ramp will be erected at Franklin and Seventh.

The intersection at West Railroad Avenue and Ninth Street will receive curb extensions on both sides of the two north corners of the intersection. Pedestrian crosswalk markings will be placed on all legs. A rectangular rapid flashing beacon will be placed across Railroad on the east side of the intersection and ADA curb ramps will be retrofitted at Railroad and Ninth. Audible pedestrian push buttons will be installed.

Ninth Street between Franklin Street and the alley to the south will receive curbs and gutters. Curb extensions will be added on both sides of the southeast corner of the Franklin and Ninth Street intersection, with ADA curb ramps.

A median island will be installed at the existing pedestrian crossing across Shelton Springs Road just north of the south driveway for Shelton High School. The crossing will include rectangular rapid flashing beacons, audible pedestrian push buttons and ADA curb ramps.

Speed feedback signs will be erected on Shelton Springs Road between Wallace Kneeland Boulevard and Tarragon Avenue.
