WIAA releases statement on discriminatory behavior

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has released a statement regarding discriminatory behavior after several of incidents this year involving racist taunts and actions at athletic contests.

According to the statement, the WIAA said these kinds of behaviors have no place in schools or communities and encourages everyone to create a safe and fair environment for competition. WIAA staff is following leadership of schools and leagues involved to talk about prevention strategies to ensure opposing students and fans are treated with respect.

The WIAA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee has developed a Bias Reporting Form, available on the homepage of the WIAA website, for the purpose of reporting discriminatory behavior at athletic events. After each submission, WIAA staff will notify the school involved to verify an investigation into the matter has begun.

The WIAA has also announced step-by-step procedures for addressing discriminatory behavior during a game and it was sent to schools and officials. The document includes how to handle discriminatory harassing behavior reported to event management by an official, student or coach, behavior reported to an official by a student or coach or behavior seen or heard by an official.

KING 5 reported Monday that Capital High School students in Olympia walked out Monday after a viral video of someone shouting a racial slur during a high school basketball game at a player on the visiting team. The students walked out because they didn't want the incident to represent their school. The Shelton boys basketball team hosted Capital on Dec. 6 in a non-league game won by the Cougars, 56-48.
