Solo candidates for two city council seats

Only one name appears on the Nov. 2 general election ballot for two Shelton City Council seats.

Eric Onisko is seeking a second four-year term as position No. 2 on the seven-member council. Sharon Schirman is the only listed candidate running for a four-year term as position No. 3.

Onisko owns two Shell stations, at Bayshore and on Angleside. He is president of the Shelton Metropolitan Park District.

Schirman is the owner/operator of ISH PNW in downtown Shelton. She is a member of the board of directors for Crossroads Housing of Mason County.

The Shelton-Mason County Journal sent six questions to each candidate. Only Onisko responded.

Onisko

1. What are the biggest challenges facing the city?

In my opinion our biggest challenge would be finding a solution to homelessness. Keeping up with increasing expenses without raising rates or fees. 

We need housing at all levels starting with affordable housing and I’d like to see that happen in the next couple years. 

2. How will the city entice new businesses and residents?

We have formed a committee of builders, real estate agents, citizens and other professionals to suggest changes in our code to make things faster and easier. We authorized our city manager to find and hire an economic development professional.

3. What is the city’s role in addressing the challenges of the pandemic?

The state and county health department are the lead on the pandemic. There are several challenges, we do allow staff to work at home when possible. 

4. What does Shelton need?

Shelton needs growth. More business means more revenue and that helps stabilize utility rates. Housing would go a long ways in attracting more businesses to look here for a home. 

5. What strengths would you bring to the council?

In my four years, I have looked out for citizens and rate payers and will continue to do so. I think I bring common sense and stay true to what I’ve campaigned on as I can. 

6. Who is a local, state or national political person you admire, and why?

In my four years on the council I would have to say I admire our delegation Senator Tim Sheldon, Drew MacEwen and Dan Griffey. Without their support, we couldn’t have accomplished half of the infrastructure and road projects we have done in the last several years.
