  • Letters to the Editor

    Apr 13, 2023

Letter response Editor, the Journal, Recently I wrote a letter about Senate Bill 5427. This bill, regardless of protestations to the contrary, will be used to silence critics. Milton Friedman, the great American economist said, “One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results.” Many programs with great intentions end up as political terrorism. An example is the COVID shutdown of Washington. Gov. Jay Inslee said he did it for our health and safety; instead it put many businesses out of...

  • A call to action for our community

    Billy Thomas|Apr 13, 2023

Mason County is a great place to live, work, and play. We are warm and welcoming people. We have miles of coast, trails, mountains and lakes for recreation. We have active and thriving small businesses with a variety of distinct fare and wonderful food. We also have differing opinions on social justice. I have witnessed and experienced instances of racism and discrimination in our community, and I believe that we can work together to create a more inclusive and welcoming community for all people...

The first settlers to make their homes near the head of Little Skookum Inlet in the mid-1880s called their settlement Kamilche, after the Native American name for the valley. Around 1889, a logging railroad was pushing its way past Kamilche up Little Skookum to reach more open water. When the railroad reached the point where Little Skookum merged with Totten Inlet, docks were built and a small community called New Kamilche took shape. In addition to homes, there was a hotel, saloons, store...

  • 'Slaughter Nick for President' a human rights win

    Kirk Boxleitner|Apr 13, 2023

The approach of Easter had me in a kind of contemplative mood, so I finally got around to seeing a documentary I'd first heard about when it debuted in 2012, but which, for whatever reasons, I simply never managed to watch at the time, until I found it on Amazon Prime Video. It's a story for the ages, as an oppressive despot wages war in Eastern Europe, and a decidedly unserious actor suddenly becomes the unlikely voice of an opposition movement fighting for freedom. While it has parallels to...

The Kraken made some improvements in the offseason by acquiring some key players this season, including Andre Burakovsky, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Martin Jones, and bringing up the first ever draft pick by the Kraken, Matty Beniers. These players added to the core...

The first Trout Pond day - Saturday at Verle's on Golden Pheasant Road just outside Shelton - was reportedly an overall success. WDFW Region 3 State Hunting Coordinator Kelly Riordan said the event drew a few hundred families and at least 225 kids fished. The mobile fish pond was stocked with 300 Rainbow Trout and a few jumbo-sized Rainbow Trout. "The message of introducing all generations to the outdoors hit the mark, even in quite poor weather," Riordan told the Journal in an email. "A steady...

The fire commissioners wrote a letter Feb. 27 to the Mason County Board of Commissioners asking to formally inquire about the county's intentions and timeline for moving into the old fire station. "We are approaching a year since we have vacated the building," the letter...

At 1 o’clock, I had a permanent put in my hair at Gorst and did not get home until 4:30. Sam had dragged the road and oh! it did look so nice. Then he got supper while I got ready which was...
