Last Thursday morning, toddlers and their parents and guardians enjoyed music, movement and art during Toddler Storytime at the Shelton Timberland Library. An hour later, they were invited to head downstairs to twirl in colorful lights during the Cosmic Library event. Forty-five minutes later, Storytime for Grownups was underway, and 15 minutes after that, the Teen Art Club gathered. Then came the canines for Dog Tales, read to them by children. "We have 92 events for the month," said Erin...

Put out trees for recycling Shelton Public Works crew on Monday will begin picking up Christmas trees for recycling. “Freedom of choice is what you got Freedom from choice is what you want.” — “Freedom of Choice,” Devo Imagine being a prehistoric human, sitting around a communal firepit after the dark comes with your closest companion — you know, the person you love so much that you share a nook in the cave with him. It’s just the two of you, settling down after a hard day of milling grain, slaying prey and not getting killed. After you settle in around the fire stones, the conversation turns to what color-pr...
8 was a full and successful year. Much has already been said about the November 2024 general election. I do have a couple follow-up items to address. Apparently, one voter submitted two ballots, and we had a couple instances where someone might have signed a ballot for another voter, including a voter that might have passed away prior to the signature date on the ballot return envelope. Pending the results of an initial investigation, I will forward any pertinent information to the Mason...
Thank you Editor, the Journal, January is School Board Appreciation Month in Washington. Please join me in thanking the work of the Pioneer School District School Board. Ellory Rowe, Robert Clark, Rick Lee, Rebecca Bechtolt and Dr. Susan Day volunteer their time to represent and serve the constituents who elected them. School board work is challenging, but at the same time rewarding. The challenging part is dealing with financial constraints, new state and federal laws that impact school districts and turnover in employees. The rewarding part...

Are you interested in adding plants to your landscape without adding additional costs to your budget? Learning to propagate plants can help you achieve that goal. Different propagation techniques are suited for different times of the year. Hardwood stem cuttings are ideal for this time of year because deciduous plants have dropped their leaves and the wood has entered dormancy. During this phase, the plant’s energy is focused on root development. Red-osier dogwood, ocean spray, osoberry, mock-orange, salmonberry and elderberries are examples o...

What was it like attending the tiny rural schools of yesteryear in Mason County? An upcoming exhibit at the Mason County Historical Society Museum in downtown Shelton will shine some light on that experience. The staff is working on the exhibit, which will probably open at the end of February, said Liz Arbaugh, the museum's director. "We're focusing on schools because in early Mason County they were really the community centers," Arbaugh said. She added, "We can tell a lot about the families...

The winter holidays brought with them two cinematic takes on a couple of classics of 20th century pop culture, Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" and James Mangold's "A Complete Unknown." I found both to be solidly good, even as they felt tantalizingly close, yet just out of reach, of being truly great. In some ways, it's my fault for not being as thrilled by Eggers' "Nosferatu" as I was by his work on "The Northman" in 2022. I hadn't studied the legend of Amleth, which inspired Shakespeare's "Hamlet,"...
