This week is Halloween and voting. I wish she would have wrote the last name of their candidate. He won. Mary cleans out her father's things in the little apartment that was above the garage. Very sad. Mary stays busy as ever! Friday, Oct. 29, 1948 Two ladies from the Mormon Society in Bremerton came to talk about the quilt and they have it all settled now. Then Betty Fischler and Wilma Rasmussen came for the flowers, and we talked and talked. At 4 I picked up Helen Mitchell and Blanche Hackett...
Mary is still mourning the death of her father and a couple of times she speaks of it. Mary and Sam have left town and are in Canada to help break the sadness. When they get home, Sam takes the dog and goes duck hunting. Friday, Oct. 22, 1948 Today we ate breakfast downstairs and checked out of the hotel. To the dock and could not get on the 11:15 ferry but at 12:15 got on the Princess Kathleen and arrived in Nanaimo at 3. Then it was 73 miles to Victoria so now we have a motel a couple of...
This was a very sad week for Mary and her family. Her dad died and she is in shock. I think this is the first time in almost 15 years of transcribing her diary that she shows so much emotion. She loved her father. He lived his final years with Mary and Sam in the apartment above their garage. Friday, Oct. 15, 1948 Today I arose early and got my work done, though I was tired. Sam washed clothes after I got started. Squires came down and planted 42 wild azaleas. Sam went duck hunting and got one...
Fall is sneaking up on Mary. She still makes the effort to sit in the sun when it is out. She even has a hammock. Can you picture Mary in her hammock in the sun doing her nails? Friday, Oct. 8, 1948 A very warm sunny day and I cleaned good. Squires finished all the transplanting we can do until we have a good frost and can move dahlias and roses. Sam got up late and went to Seattle for repairs on a machine. I finished marking the balance of the dahlias. Also laid out in the sun in the hammock...
Mary's dad caught a skunk in a trap. Now you know that must have been a bit of a challenge to remove it without getting sprayed. The terminology "hair spray" wasn't being used yet and Mary refers to it as "hair lacquer." I think hair spray is more ladylike. More food, flowers, shopping in Seattle and meetings. Mary is a busy gal this week. Friday, Oct. 1, 1948 Arose early and picked up Ruth Small. We parked car and caught the 8:30 ferry. We parted on 2nd Ave. to go to our respective meetings....
Mary and Sam go to the Puyallup Fair with the Fischlers. Mary is a cleaning fool this week. When she speaks of the cabin it is next to the house and the apartment that her father lives is on the second floor of the garage. Taking care of all three places is quite a job. Friday, Sept. 24, 1948 Did not set clock right so it did not alarm so I called Sam and we dressed in a hurry, but Fischlers were here before we were ready. Ate breakfast at Pearl's Diner in Purdy. Very good. To Fair at 12. The...
There was a fair going on this week and Mary entered some exhibits. Mary does not say which fair, but she won some prizes. Maybe the Puyallup? Remember from last week her regular hairdresser left and would be out of town for a while? So, Mary gets her hair done at a beauty salon in Gorst. Summer is coming to an end, folks, so enjoy what's left. Friday, Sept. 17, 1948 Slept late as I was tired. Then cleaned house and up to see about taking weaving to the fair. Called on Robertsons on my way home....
What is considered “tame” blackberries? They go crazy! I just learned this week the person who does Mary’s hair is a man. Unusual for that time. Remember when cleaning your shoes and mending your clothes were a common thing? I used to use white shoe polish to put on my tennis shoes to keep them looking good. I did not iron my hair though. Friday, Sept. 10, 1948 Slept until late and then cleaned house. Put away my bag that has been unpacked since Tuesday. A wonderful day and lovely out. To the s...
There is no way I could keep up with Mary's schedule. I got tired just reading this week's diary. Driving back and forth twice from the fishing camp to Belfair, plus a trip to Seattle. She writes of the reoccurring winds that come up on the Columbia River and that is very common. Often the winds will reach 15 mph. Friday, Sept. 3, 1948 Arose early and saw all my mother's flowers. She has the finest flower garden in the block. To Frederick's and bought a black satin hat for winter and a copper...
In 1948, the Astoria Bridge didn't exist and Mary had to take a ferry to cross the Columbia River. The bridge opened in 1966 and is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. It is a little over 4 miles long. It was also the final segment of U.S. Highway 101 between Olympia and Los Angeles. She writes about it being windy on the Columbia River and it does get very windy daily. Three boats capsized one day because of the wind. My family lost my oldest brother due to his boat capsizing....
Mary and Sam loved the outdoors. When I am not in Bremerton or Belfair, I live on my 1968 30-foot Chris-Craft in a marina outside of Longview on the Columbia River. A lot of fishermen keep their boats there during fishing season. My neighbor goes out every chance he can get and this year he has been lucky. He even gave me a beautiful salmon weighing about 20 pounds. Better enjoy this weather, folk. It's not going to last much longer. Friday, Aug. 20, 1948 Today Dick and Clara were gone home...
Mary is getting back into her routine after their big trip to Alaska and Canada. We can tell that Mary and Sam are doing pretty good financially. She has help with the garden and the trips they take. I chuckled when this week she asks herself, “Where is our summer?” We were just asking that same question to each other a couple of weeks ago. Now we are putting on the air conditioner. Got to have the temperature just right. Friday, Aug. 6, 1948 A dark gloomy morning. I was afraid it would rai...
I enjoyed reading this week’s diary. Mary and Sam had an eventful week at the Calgary Stampede and during their return home. Auto camps and log cabins have kind of become a thing of the past. Friday, July 9, 1948 We arose late and ate breakfast. Then cleaned up camp and out to the stampede grounds. We saw dozens of cows, pigs, etc. The finest in Canada. Saw art exhibit, fancy work and other things. To the show. We had good seats too, K16 and 17. The most interesting of all was a wild cow m...
Mary spoke of her trip coming up last week and we finally find out where she and Sam are headed. This week they went to the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada. They pitched a tent by a river in an auto camp for their stay. Sounds like a lot of fun to me. Friday, July 2, 1948 Went to Seattle and was out to the little house. The first renter had made off with the dishes, so it was pretty bare. Got some slacks and shirts at the Bon and killed a lot of time as I had but little to do. We ate dinner...
More Chapter meetings, gardening, cleaning house, ironing, daily swimming in the canal and guess what? President Truman drove through Belfair. I bet that was exciting. Starting to get warmer too. Friday, June 4, 1948 Arose early and caught the 8:30 boat and visited with Eleanor Orcutt on the way over. Then to meeting and it was very interesting. We had over 30 girls out. Then I did a little shopping and went up to see the doctor. He said I was OK so I caught the 4:30 boat. Eleanor Orcutt was on...
This was a very enjoyable week. Mary and Sam were on the move the whole week and when they got back from their travels, Sam took off with Bill Cady to go fishing. All the places they traveled to brought back wonderful memories from my life being in those places. My boat I live on part time is near the Longview bridge. I caught my first salmon when I was 9 in Pacific City. Forty years ago, I attended a craft fair in Yachats and bought a piece of pottery. Just a couple of months ago I was near...
I think Mary’s favorite adjective this week is “lovely.” Everything was lovely this week. Weather sounds a lot like what we are having too. Are you having a lovely week? Friday, May 21, 1948 This was a clear windy day and not a bit warm like yesterday, so it was not so nice for the school picnic. Today Sam hung the old eight-day clock we always had in the store. Seems strange to hear it again. Then he mowed the entire lawn and oh it looks so nice. I finished weeding the strawberry patch and it w...
Spring work is being done on the homestead. Planting, trimming the lawn and washing windows are on the list. Sam washed both cars. Friday, May 14, 1948 This morning Doug was down here before we had breakfast talking about a piece of land he is planning on buying from Rose Wolfe behind our brick store. Sam went to Bellingham with Steve Smith and will return Sunday eve. I cleaned house and then went over to Skene’s, and we walked up the creek. Saw all her flowers. Mrs. McGee is weaving drapes. T...
Friday, April 30, 1948 This morning Nell Anderson and Edna Haines came early and we went to catch the 10:15 boat. Mayme Gould nearly missed it as she thought it was 10:30. I had given her up and gone on the ferry when in she came. Sam dropped us off at the Gowman Hotel and got the car serviced. We went to lunch for "Little Sisters" and had a marvelous time. We introduced our "Sisters" and heard a good program. Saw Mrs. Ostrander and was I glad. I hope to visit her chapter one day. Afterward we...
Spring has come to Belfair in 1948. Mary is planting flowers and weeding her garden, and the lawn is getting mowed regularly. Sam finally returns at the end of the week from his trip. The Crosswhites took their boat out and ran aground on the beach. Boating season is starting too. Friday, April 23, 1948 Tried to sleep late but couldn’t so got up. Cleaned apartment and cabin then took Mrs. Thompson to Quimbys and Sundstroms with a potted pink hydrangea from the Belfair O.E.S. Social Club. They w...
Sam started washing clothes when Mary hurt her arm several weeks ago. I think she is milking it. What do you think? Mary's day trip with Eunice and Bud was a full day and sounded like fun. Going to the beach is the best. Friday, March 19, 1948 Today I woke up at 7:30 a.m. and could not go to sleep so I got up. After breakfast we went through the initiatory work twice and it was really a pleasure to work with one so anxious to learn. Home at 1:15 and Sam had already taken Sundstrom to Seattle. So I drove into Bremerton and got my shrub, saw...
Mary has been writing about this large plot of land that she and Sam were purchasing and I wonder if this is the Theler wetlands? As time has gone on in this diary, one can see how the Thelers became prosperous. They had rentals, the mercantile store with a gas station, tavern and did a lot of property development. I think they worked hard to get to this place in their lives. Laws and taxes were quite different. Remember when Sam and his help dug the holes for the gas station’s fuel tanks and i...
A couple of weeks ago I was sitting on a friend's deck and the sun had gone down and the frogs were singing up a storm. I always think that is a sign spring is around the corner. When Mary writes about going out in the sunny weather I am jealous. I am ready for sunny weather, with much higher temperatures of course. Friday, March 5, 1948 Arose at 8 and ate at coffee shop downstairs. Then to wholesale house and got our supplies for Masonic Temple. We found everything we wanted. Looked at Dohrman...
Friday, Feb. 27, 1948 Today the Light Co. sent some men out and they took down the trees without damaging fences or anything. We were so glad. Went over to Skene’s for the saw and John’s for the pee-vee. They were away over at John’s for over a year. Charlie Gilman came down and dug some clams. Sam went to Seattle and Tacoma to get stuff for Emmett. Rec’d a letter and one card from Bisbee post matron Pearl Bickle. Edith Skene came over and we drove to Bremerton. We shopped at an antique shop an...
It’s a plain old busy week for Mary. She is a social butterfly. When I was a kid, my mother would sprinkle clothing that was to be ironed with water. You couldn’t wait too long because mold could start to grow on the clothing. Friday, Feb. 20, 1948 Squires came down and worked until noon so now all the early flowering stuff is moved. We have the garden in pretty good shape. Sam raked cedar limbs and needles off the lawn and cleaned up the pile I raked yesterday. We just finished when it beg...
