Mary and Cleora drive to Pullman to pick up the girls from college after their finals. Mary finished putting her wool clothes in the attic for the summer. My mother used moth balls to prevent moths from eating on our clothes. We had several winter/snow wool outfits that would become hand-me-downs to us younger kids. Saturday, May 28, 1949 Washed clothes and then sewed up curtains for the cabin. Dusted and was ready to leave at 1. Sam fixed the stove so it will work and mowed a part of the lawn....
The rhodies are in full bloom here in Longview. They are beautiful. The weather is very similar compared with 1949. When I am in Seattle and catching a ferry, it is not unusual that I eat at Acres of Clams too. I love eating outside. Looks like Mary and Sam have put in new flooring in the house. I can remember my mom scrubbing the floors on her hands and knees. Once a year she would refinish the hardwood floors and as kids we loved sliding around in our stocking feet. Hope everyone had a great...
I can guarantee that if you would have stopped by Mary and Sam's place, you would have to go for a stroll and look at their flowers. When I was a kid in the 1950s, my mom would always take visitors out in the yard to look at the flowers. Usually, she would cut a bouquet for them to take home. Saturday, May 14, 1949 This day we arose fairly early and found the sun out warm and bright. We cleaned house and the men rode over to Henderson Bay with Rudy Sundstrom and returned at 1:30 with 3...
Tulips were coming up a bit late 74 years ago, just like today. I think Mary is a sun worshipper. What do you think? It is only May and I bet she has a head start on that tan of hers. Saturday, May 7, 1949 Today I got up early and washed all the clothes. Then scrubbed the cabin good and to Belfair. We saw Kreislers at Belfair and had a nice talk. Bought our groceries and went to the locker and home. Cleaned the house and then laid out in the sun. Oh, it is surely nice out! So warm. The crab...
I think Mary Theler was a social butterfly. What do you think? She loves being around people and visiting. I am giving Sam kudos for washing the clothes. He does it quite often. Driving into Gorst almost every day to get her hair combed is a bit eccentric, don't you think? Definitely shows signs of a privileged life. Good thing Sam was a good provider. Have you guessed Mary's favorite adjective? Saturday, April 23, 1949 Today I arose early and went after all the bread so was home by 11. Cleaned...
The barometer points to rain. I remember as a kid we had a barometer with a thermostat. There was a third gauge, but I cannot remember what it was. You know as soon as I send this to the paper I will remember. Saturday, April 16, 1949 We ate fairly early, and I cleaned the cabin good. Sam ran the vacuum over rugs and chairs while I changed the bed and got it all done by one. Then Henry came so I made the potato salad for Easter, and we ate ham with it. Very good and we all enjoyed it. Henry...
My mom would buy stationery. I have been looking for some but with no luck. As I am getting older, I feel writing letters is a nice way to communicate. Belfair had an earthquake on April 13, 1949. Mary was at the hairdresser's and was under the dryer when it hit. Bet that was a shocker for everyone. Saturday, April 9, 1949 Picked up Squires at 9:10 and he worked about 2 hours then said it was too hot on some new plants, so he went home. I wrapped some stuff for the bazaar and Blanche cleaned the...
Mary is gearing up for her flowers on the property. Doesn’t sound like the weather was particularly great, but trying to break into the next season with more sun. Mary likes her sun and likes to be tanned. Saturday, April 2, 1949 Today the sun was out when I got up. Sam washed clothes and I cleaned house. At 1 o’clock, I had a permanent put in my hair at Gorst and did not get home until 4:30. Sam had dragged the road and oh! it did look so nice. Then he got supper while I got ready which was...
You get the idea that Mary is getting tired of the rain and cold? I know I am! March is always the time we are all getting fed up with winter in the Northwest. Saturday, March 19, 1949 Today it is raining again and very windy out. We ate about 9:30 a.m. and then drove up to Sedro-Woolley to see Henry and Laurice. Henry was still in bed but soon got up and was "raring" to eat. Sat there and talked until nearly 2 when we went back to Conway. They have refinished an old house and it looks very...
Rain, rain and more rain this week. I think Mary and Sam might have given their dog to friends. If they did, I'm sure the waking them up in the morning to be fed was the deal breaker for the poor pup. I would like to write about hankies. We do not see many people carry hankies today. Often, I would get a birthday card from my grandmother in Iowa and inside would be a hanky and a couple of quarters taped inside. When my mother's only sibling passed away a few years ago, her children had a few...
Sounds like Mary is totally comfortable being alone with Sam out of town. She is quite social. Having her shoes repaired, ironing and mending clothes shows what life was like at the time. When I was a kid and we lived on a farm in Oregon, we butchered a cow and a pig each year. My folks rented a meat locker in Sandy, Oregon. I got to go once and see what it looked like. The containers that held the meat were big metal baskets with a number on them and a padlock that was my parents'. It was very...
Sam is still in California and Mary keeps herself busy. The weather is getting nicer and she works out in their yard picking up, raking and burning branches from winter storms. When she leaves her new pup is extremely happy upon her return. Mary speaks of her new pup several times this week. One day she was gone most of the day and into the evening and when she arrived home there was no pup. After exploring, she discovered him on the neighbor's porch. Poor little guy got lonely. Saturday, Feb....
I think Mary's favorite adjective is lovely. What do you think? I wish Mary would have taken a picture of their new puppy. Busy week for Mary and Sam and the weather is still trying to be winter. Thursday, Feb. 10, 1949 Sam came home on the last ferry so came in late. Arose late and cleaned house. Then we went to Post Office. Had to try the hill twice before we got up. So icy! At 1:15 I drove to the beauty shop. Sam had to go up twice to make the hill again. After my hair was done, I drove to Eu...
Mary is home from their trip and taking care of business and catching up on her socializing. The weather seems to be very similar to what we are having. Cold! I don’t go out unless I absolutely must. I like warmth. Friday, Feb. 4, 1949 Today I awoke early so got up. We left for Seattle at 8:45 a.m. and made it alright without chains. To Conductresses meeting and it was nice. Learned a lot, too. The decorations were hearts trimmed with lace. 23 were there. Bought material for Valentine addenda f...
Mary and Sam finally get home from their long trip. Five inches of snow is on the ground. Can’t stop Mary from going to Chapter. While they were gone their dog had been hit up on the road and was killed. I bet it seems different and lonely for them. Friday, Jan. 28, 1949 We woke up before the alarm went off so soon were on our way. Ate at Tip’s on Wilshire at 8 a.m. and were at Rosemead to get Vina and Henry about 9. We left at 9:15. Stopped at Santa Monica for mail (there was none) then ano...
Mary and Sam drive to Los Angeles and visit friends. After spending several days, they head to Belfair. I remember when most communications were done through mail. When traveling, you could forward mail to a post office in the city you were headed to. That is rare these days. My sister has moved several times this past year and she would always fill out a new address form and she is lucky if she sees her mail within two weeks. This could be a problem when you are expecting medications coming...
I apologize for not writing last week’s diary. I had to have a tooth pulled and had a very bad infection. Still cannot open my mouth up to bite things but that might be a good thing. It sounds like Mary and Sam are on their way back and have several other stops along the way. I hope you are all staying warm. Friday, Jan. 14, 1949 This morning it was sunny and warm, no wind, so we went riding out beyond the first windmill. We brought back a veal to be killed and a cow about to come fresh. Also s...
Mary and Sam attend a New Year's Eve party while on their hunting trip. Sam has been extremely successful hunting for ducks and geese. They eventually head south to Arizona and Mexico. Friday, Dec. 31, 1948 Sam got up at 6:45 a.m. and left to go hunting with Henry. So I went back to sleep, then they came back to get Sam's boots and I woke up. Again, I went to sleep and did not get up until 9:30 a.m. To the hotel and Laurice was just fixing her hair in pin curls after a shower. We ate breakfast...
Hunting on Christmas. Go figure. I get a kick when Mary writes how they had to put chains on, dig out snow and a rock. I think we know it was Sam doing that. I always get a kick when Mary says he has done nothing. I am always amazed when she writes of him doing laundry, dishes and cooks a meal. Let's not forget he had the two rear tires fixed and probably does all the driving when they are on a trip. Just saying. Friday, Dec. 24, 1948 Arose early and cleaned cabin and cooler. Took all stuff out...
Mary and Sam are going on a hunting trip. Lovey got a little miffed at Mary about the plate thing. I think Lovey could be difficult at times, but Mary doesn't seem to care. Lovey is her friend. Friday, Dec. 17, 1948 Arose early and Sam went to Seattle on several errands. I took presents and went to Belfair. Delivered to Rudy, Schlange, Emmett, Rices, Grandma White, Hacketts, Cadys and Mary Ruths. All were fine but it was a job to stay but a few minutes each place. Then to Bremerton. Mrs....
This week’s diary was a fun read for me. Mary is in the Christmas spirit helping everywhere she can to prepare for gatherings etc. It made me want to put up Christmas light on the boat. Enjoy! Friday, Dec. 10, 1948 The day of the big party. Sam and I loaded the big truck and went to town. I picked up Eunice D. and we went to Alma Brelson’s, got their organ, stove, etc., and to the Temple where we unloaded it all with the help of Bill, Alma’s nephew. I helped set tables and then went to help...
More Christmas planning. Sam goes to Seattle and Mary writes he would be attending a “clan” meeting. He does return with a new overcoat, and it sounds like it is a beauty, as Mary would say. Weather seems a lot like it is here. Friday, Dec. 3, 1948 Today arose early and Mama had potato pancakes for breakfast. Very good. At 9:45 I went downtown to Conductresses Instruction Group where we had a very fine meeting. We had a nice lunch. Saw Mrs. Howell and several others I knew. Then at 3 I met Mam...
Mary, Sam and a friend go out for Thanksgiving dinner. Has anyone else noticed how Mary is having her hair done all the time? My mom used to get her hair done every five weeks. In between, she combed her own hair out. Clothes are important to Mary also. I think she was a person who tried to look nice all the time. I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. Let the holiday season begin! Friday, Nov. 19, 1948 Arose late and made pancakes for breakfast. Then cleaned house and got my...
Friday, Nov. 12, 1948 Today Bud and Squires came down and planted all day of the big stuff. Moved the roses and planted quite a lot in our new garden. Then Skenes came over and I fried smelt for lunch. In the afternoon everything was ready for the folks. About 6, Louie, Grace and the children came. We cooked dinner and then went over to the house. Mary Ruth and Jack came down with a lovely cake, so we all had cake and coffee. Then later in came Vera and Cole and we had quite a house full. They...
I like to compare our weather at the time Mary is writing her diary. Sounds pretty much the same. In fact, it was the weather several years ago that got me into reading Mary’s diary. We were having snow in March and people were saying Belfair had never had snow this late. Mary’s diary showed they had, and on the exact same days. Friday, Nov. 5, 1948 Today I got up early and left for Bremerton. Met Maimie by the street corner. Roy Mitchell brought her to the dock. We met Bertha Attridge on the...
