Mary made me chuckle when she tells of it raining and she had just washed the car. That is living in the Pacific Northwest. Sam is looking for a new car. It is cold. Mary sees a movie with her mother this week. Mary does not like eating her breakfast in a cold kitchen. Mary's dad turns 86 years old. Friday, Feb. 6, 1948 Today I got up early and Sam rode to Bremerton with me. He got off there to go to the bank and later to go to Tacoma to see about another car. Just got to Associate Conductress...
Sam is at his convention for most of the week and returns toward the end. First thing that happens is he and Mary try to move a bed and Mary fractures her left hand. Ow! Good news is they put her arm on a board and so now Sam is doing all the cooking. While Sam is gone, Mary does not waste any time. Just an FYI, Mary's father had retired from the farm and lives with her and Sam. There was an apartment above their garage. That is why he is more a part of Mary's daily life. He eats meals with...
Sam takes off for San Francisco to a convention for 10 days so Mary has her time to herself. She keeps very busy with Chapter and goes to Seattle with Lovey. You've got to love that name. Her new rugs arrive and they go in the bedroom and she likes them. Friday, Jan. 16, 1948 Today I did all the weekend cleaning. I cleaned the collars on silk dresses and hung them in the garage to air out. Went to Walkers where I tried on a black dress and we decided how to make a Chapter dress. Then home and...
I sure hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I have shared with you that the past three years of Mary’s diary have periods when she did not write. The last published column was at the end of 1946. Her next entry was not until mid-1947. So I went to 1948 and it starts Jan. 1. We can relate to the weather and are able to compare our time with Mary’s. Thursday, Jan. 1, 1948 Arose late at 11. Laurice knocked at the door and I had just got up. Sam came soon after and said he got one duck. The...
It's 1946 and a fall week in Belfair. Mary is putting away summer clothes and cleaning the dressers and Sam goes out duck and deer hunting. There were two house fires in and near Belfair. Butter is a dollar a pound. Friday, Oct. 25, 1946 Today I went to Seattle on the 9:25 a.m. boat. Got all my work done before I left. Wrote six letters on the ferry. Went to Antique Shop and got my pitcher and four glasses. They are lovely too. Went downtown and sent Mama a vase for her birthday. Got myself...
This week, Mary is very busy with her chapter meetings and setting them up. The summer clothes have been put away and the winter clothes have come out. Sam and Bud are building a structure to store the boat and summer furniture. Thursday, Sept. 19, 1946 Picked up Edith Michael and caught the 8:30 ferry. Went to Fredericks to Associate Conductresses meeting at 10:30 and it was very interesting. Went to the card shop on 4th Ave. where we saw lovely things. To shopping and found a blond coat and...
